PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES - EXPERIENCE

Since 1983, as a professional Geotechnical Engineer - Engineering Geologist and as a founder of GEODOMISI Ltd, Consulting Engineering Company, he has carried out, or participated in over six hundred (600) Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Seismic Risk, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Hydrogeological projects, both in Private and mainly in Public Sector (Fieldwork and design of Special Foundations, Landslides, Retaining Walls, Soil and Rock Stability Analysis, Site Investigations, Tunnels, Dams, Highways, Hydrogeology, Management of Water Resources using G.I.S., Waste Management and Disposal, etc.).

Since 1981 to 1983 Dr. Sachpazis participated at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne - England, in geotechnical engineering research programs as well as in the design of deep foundations, the design of foundation for oil storage tanks, slope stability problems analyses, geotechnical investigations and  laboratory testing. During his Ph.D. research, 1983 to 1988, he performed a great deal of various soil and rock mechanics laboratory tests.

He participated in European Community Research Programs (Envireg), relevant to issues of Geotechnical Engineering. He has considerable experience in studies of Slope Stability Analysis problems in both Soils and Rocks masses (Bishop - Morgenstern, Hoek - Bray - Brown). He has extensive experience in all classification systems and methods of Soil and Rock masses and their applications in support design. (i.e.: Deere et al, Lauffer, Wickham et al (R.S.R.) Bieniawski (C.S.I.R.), Barton et al (Q - N.G.I.), Bouvard et al (A.F.T.E.S.), Swiss Specifications SIA 198 - SIA 199, Austrian Method (N.A.T.M.) (Pacher et al.) During 1989 - 1991 he was responsible for the Rock mechanics study of the stability analysis of Alistrati Cave - Tunnel in Serres district. (Works and Studies: Analysis of discontinuities using Schmidt and Kamb Stereographic nets. - C.S.I.R. (Bieniawski) classification of jointed rock mass. - Wedge or plane failure analysis (on Roofwall and Sidewall) - Two-dimensional boundary element stress analysis - Conclusions on Rock Stability problems and Support design (Rockbolts, Shotcrete, mesh). During 1995 - 1996, he has cooperated with P. Kotzias - A. Stamatopoulos Ltd Company, for the excavation works and the retaining walls of the garage of the Athens Concert Hall, as well as for the design of the new railway line at Platamon (Greek Railways O.S.E.). In addition, he has cooperated with the Contractor of Public Works P. Papadoloulos, Civil Engr, for the design of retaining walls and slope stabilization of various roads. He has also been exclusive geotechnical engineering consultant of ATTIKO METRO S.A. for the Design and Calculations of 40 Anchored Piles Retaining Walls, 19,45 m deep, of Agios Antonios Metro Station at Peristeri - Attica.cFurthermore he has been geotechnical engineering consultant of both EGNATIA ODOS S.A. and ERGOSE S.A. for the design of large scale motorway and railway projects and underground works, as  foundation of bridges, tunnels and protection and stabilization of slopes from landslides. Furthermore, he has also been the exclusive geotechnical engineering consultant of OLYMPIC GAMES ATHENS 2004  for the execution and the design of the geotechnical investigation and foundation engineering aspects for the construction of the Marathon Olympic rowing game centre roads at Schinias - Attica.

Last, he holds a professional degree - license (number 4999), issued by the Ministry of a Public Works at the categories: 21 (Soil & Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Studies and Researches), Class C (uppermost class), and 20 (Engineering Geological - Hydrogeological - Geophysical Studies and Researches), Class C (uppermost class), which enables him to undertake and execute studies and researches for the Public Sector. He is also accepted by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Directorate-General III (26-02-1997. Reg. n. 003908), for executing studies and/or provision of services in the field of Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology and Environment. He has been registered in the researchers list of the Ministry of Defence to carry out Studies and Researches on Military Projects concerning "NATO - FORTIFICATION - TOP SECRET". Finally he is a founding member of the journalistic union, titled: "European Union of Journalists for Environment and Life Quality".

He has attended eighty-nine (89) conferences - seminars, concerning Foundation Engineering, Retaining Structures for Deep Excavations (Anchored Pile Retaining Walls), Tunnels & Dams, Rock and Soil Mechanics, Engineering Geology, Environmental Aspects and Hydrogeology, Health & Safety Plans & Files, etc., given by various Professors and/or Com­panies specialized staff. He has also participated as a lecturer in more than forty 40 lectures - seminars.

 

RESEARCH WORK AND PUBLISHED PAPERS

He has twenty four (24) papers published in both International and Greek Scientific Bulletins, in the field of Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology - Hydrogeology. There are forty one (41) citations found so far on International scientific pares of other authors scientific work. He has also written four (4) academic books, titled: a) «Introduction to Soil Mechanics I», b) «Remote Sensing and photogeology. A tool to route selection of large highways and roads», c) «Introduction to Soil Mechanics II and Rock Mechanics», and d) of «Geotechnical Engineering for Tunnels and Dams».

Since January 23, 1989 to September 9, 1989 he supervised the dissertation of the civil engineer, Ourania Mesimeri, with the title: "Influence of the Geotechnical - Geological Structure on a Civil Engineer's Project in the area of North Imittos - Athens" National Technical University of Athens. This was done upon recommendation by the Associate Professor of the National Technical University of Athens, Dr. Aliki Livaditi. Since December 1990 to April 1991, he supervised the Diploma thesis of the Civil Engineers G. Boutsikos and G. Mortzos, with the title: "Geotechnical and Geological Investigation in the Areas of Chalandri - Papagos - Ag. Paraskevi, Athens", National Technical University of Athens. Both the above mentioned dissertations dealt with the Geotechnical properties and behaniour of Athens Schist. Since June 1991 to March 1992, he supervised the Diploma thesis of the Mine Engineer, B. Filippis,  on the issue of: "Study of the Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of Flysch, TITAN quarry, Patras, and Investigation of the slope stability problems of this location", National Technical University of Athens. Finally he has been a lecturer in specific subsidised seminars to qualified Engineers, organised by the Technical Chamber of Greece and the E.U..
